EDINBURGH MONARCHS speedway captain Craig Cook claimed a third-place podium spot in the Premier League Riders Championship, which took place at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium.

Cook, who won the crown in 2012, was the top scorer in the qualifying heats with 12 points, but team-mate Sam Masters – another previous winner – failed to make the semi-final when he suffered mechanical issues in his final ride. Cook, who faced Peterborough’s Ulrich Ostergaard, Workington’s Ricky Wells and Somerset’s’s Josh Grajczonek in the Grand Final, took a while before choosing his gate position in the showdown before eventually opting for gate No.2, giving Ostergaard the opportunity to pick the more favourable inside berth. Cook didn’t make the quickest of starts but fought his way into third place as Ostergaard romped away to clinch the title with Wells in the runners-up spot.
