EDINBURGH MONARCHS’ No.1 Craig Cook has signed a contract to ride for Stal Gorzow in the Polish Extra League in 2015, a move which was exclusively revealed in the Evening News in September.
But the Capital club, who are aiming to successfully defend their Premier League crown when their Armadale campaign begins in April, insist Cook’s domestic fixtures will have priority over Gorzow who race each Sunday.
Cumbrian born Cook has been in contact with the Polish champions since last year and had hoped to ride for them in 2014, however his Monarchs commitments, which were plentiful due to the staggering success the team achieved last term, prevented that.
But Gorzow maintained their interest in Cook and a deal was finally concluded this week.
Cook has been under pressure in some quarters to spread his wings abroad and this gilt- edged chance will be a useful gauge in determining his credentials to make a name for himself in Europe.
Cook tweeted he was “delighted” at landing this opportunity and Monarchs’ fans weighed in with their best wishes.
Initially Cook, who will continue to double-up with Belle Vue Aces in the Elite League, will have to prove himself in a series of challenge matches.
Monarchs said: “Craig’s British Premier League commitments will obviously come first, however we do wish him well in trying to establish himself in one of the best leagues in the world.”
