Edinburgh Monarchs have sprung a major surprise by capturing American racer Aaron Fox, who will make his UK Premier League speedway debut at Armadale in 2014.
Skipper Derek Sneddon has been re-signed along with team-mate Max Fricke, who made such a big impact last season, to complete Monarchs’ seven man line-up.
The acquisition of Fox, who comes in on a five point average, could be deemed a gamble – but Monarchs director Mike Hunter said today it Is one which could pay off.
“Aaron was recommended to us by USA Dream Team director Steve Evans. After initially agreeing to ride, Aaron got cold feet, feeling he wasn’t fully prepared yet. Steve intervened again and, after securing further sponsorship for him, Aaron now feels ready to come over. We are delighted to have him and he’s very enthusiastic.”
Fox commented: “I have been trying to find a team in Britain for a while now, and it’s great to get fixed up with Edinburgh.”
Sneddon’s return after a pretty indifferent 2013 campaign may not please everybody, but Hunter says: “One of the advantages of having Derek back is that with so many new faces in our side, he is the ideal man to mould them all together.
“Some people may have thought we should have retained Theo (Pijper), but the way we have built the side Derek fitted in.”
Complete squad: Craig Cook, Sam Masters, Max Fricke, Aaron Fox, Steve Worrall, Justin Sedgemen, and Derek Sneddon.
