Edinburgh Monarchs’ No. 1 Craig Cook got his 2014 speedway season off to a brilliant start by winning the sixth staging of the Ben Fund Bonanaza individual event at Leicester Stadium yesterday afternoon.
Cook also top-scored for Team GB who outpaced a Rest of the World side 45-29 in the team challenge contest.
However, Cook was brought down by Swindon’s Nick Morris in the individual Grand Final.
Cook made a good start from the tapes but couldn’t shake of Morris who tried an audacious dive on the Monarchs star on the last turn.
Morris lifted, causing both men to come down heavily against the air fence. And while both riders escaped unhurt, Cook’s bike was almost wrecked.
He said: “I’m pretty disappointed with my bike damage, but apart from that I felt pretty good in what was my first meeting of the season.
The track was good early on but I struggled later when it turned slicker.”
Team GB boss Alun Rossiter was impressed with Cook’s 11 point contribution in the team contest and the Monarchs star, who has already built up a good rapport with Rossiter, looks certain to earn more caps over the course of the year.
