Volleyball: Scots girls in shape for Novotel Cup

The Scottish Volleyball League programme may have gone into cold storage but Scotland’s national teams are turning up the heat over the festive period.

Scotland’s women’s team – which includes City of Edinburgh trio Jen Thom, Fiona Kennie and Naomi Symonds – have an intensive three-day camp in Stirling from December 28-30 ahead of the Novotel Cup in Luxembourg from January 4-6.

The Scots face Norway, England and hosts Luxembourg in the build-up to the Small Nations Championship finals in Malta in June.

Scotland never won a match in last January’s Novotel Cup but head coach Craig Faill is confident his squad will be better prepared this time.

“In last season’s event, Luxembourg won comfortably and we never really threatened them,” he stated.

“With the belief that now exists within our squad we are confident that this time around the contest will be much closer and will be a fitting rehearsal for the main event in June.”

Scotland’s men’s team will train at Edinburgh University tomorrow and Friday with coach Simon Loftus having spread his net wide as he plans towards the Small Countries finals in Cyprus in June.

As well as including ten current City of Edinburgh players, he has named Gavin Watt, Colin Macnab and Mark McGivern – former Edinburgh players now in France – and another ex-City player Robin Miedzybrodski, now playing in England.

McGivern’s ASUL Lyon currently sit top of the French Pro B League and face closest rivals St Nazaire, just a point behind, next weekend.
