When do cinemas open in Edinburgh? Dates Vue, Odeon, Cameo and Filmouse to reopen as lockdown eases

It’s now been confirmed by Nicola Sturgeon that Edinburgh will be moving down to Level 2 coronavirus restrictions from next Monday, May 17.

It’s great news for film fans who have been starved of the big screen experience, as it means cinemas are allowed to open for the first time this year thanks to the eased restrictions.

Here’s when you can expect your favourite cinema to open in the coming weeks, along with some of the films.

Cineworld, Fountain Park

Cineworld have announced that their Scottish cinemas will reopen on Wednesday, May 19. Screening schedules have yet to be finalised, but Unlimited Card holders can look forward to preview showings of drama Frankie (starring Isabelle Huppert) on May 23, horror The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It (starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) on May 25, and Dream Horse (starring Toni Colette) on June 3.

Vue Cinema, Omni Centre

Vue Cinema, Ocean Terminal

Vue have confirmed that both of their Edinburgh cinemas will open on Monday, May 17. Promising a mix of the latest releases and much-loved classics, new films screening will include family fun with Peter Rabbit 2 and horror Spiral: From the Book of Saw.

Edinburgh Filmhouse

The much-loved independent cinema will open its doors on Monday, May 31. Screentimes have yet to be confirmed but expect showings of Oscar-winners Nomadland, Sound of Metal and Judas and the Black Messiah.

Dominion Cinema

The luxurious Morningside cinema has yet to announce a reopening date.

Odeon, Lothian Road

Odeon, Edinburgh West

Odeon have now confirmed all their cinemas will be reopening on Monday, May 17. Booking is not yet open, but it’s been announced that horror sequel A Quiet Place 2 will be previewing from May 31.

The Cameo

The Tollcross favourite is part of the Picturehouse Group, who have announced the reopening of their English cinemas on Wednesday, May 19, and say news about their Edinburgh operation is “to follow”. Films expected include Pedro Almodoovar’s The Human Voice and creature feature Godzilla Vs. Kong.
