Karen Koren: I’m going back to comedy roots

I’VE been going to the same hairdresser for the past 35 years. I know, it’s a long time.

I inherited Carol from my old friend Steve Milazzo, who used to do my hair, but he was always so busy that he got Carol to look after me as his junior.

Carol could only have been about 18 at the time and over the years she has permed my hair, dyed my hair and cut it in all shapes and sizes.

She has looked after my hair well, so you can imagine my surprise when I found that she inadvertently put the wrong colour on my roots the other day.

She was washing my hair and said to me, “Karen, are you in a hurry today?” I commented that I wasn’t really.

“Oh, its just that, you’re not going to believe this, but you’re roots are brown,” says Carol trying not to laugh.

Well we had to wash it, dry it and then try again. It’s still brown! I’m having to go back!

This is so unlike Carol to make mistakes, maybe she is getting old and forgetful. We were talking to her lovely daughter Jordana at the time, she was in getting her hair trimmed and Carol didn’t notice what she was doing.

The problem is not that it looks very bad, as its quite trendy to have darker roots than the rest of your hair, but when my hair starts growing in, my roots will be white.

I need it to get back to my normal colour as I am going to London to do a screen test for a new TV project.

I think I am probably too old for what they are looking for. However, it is not so much age as what you know in the comedy business. I think I know enough for it to go well, though I am a little nervous and will be a lot more so if I don’t look my best.

I’ll let you know how it goes.
