Her family has planned a birthday surprise, with friends, songs and a grasshopper band.

But who is that with his twitchy tail and shining eyes watching them closely? It’s the Bright Orange Cat. Will he join the party, make some new friends and share some birthday cake, or does he have something else in mind?

At Pleasance Courtyard until Monday, young audiences are invited to help Kika’s family of mice bake a special birthday cake... and even get to share some of the cake.

This fun, interactive, evocative family show, suitable for children aged three to eight, helps audiences look at the perception of ‘outsiders’ and how people react to them.

A delightful interactive story with puppetry by award winning storyteller Danyah Miller, Kika’s Birthday is written by John and Miller and directed by Samantha Lane.

The show opened to critical acclaim last year when it was hailed “A magical engaging tale... The storytelling is first class. Great humour. A genuinely heartwarming show for little ones that’s beautifully performed and delivered.”

Miller, a renowned storyteller, works internationally as a solo performer - her production I Believe in Unicorns premiered at the Fringe in 2013 before touring the UK, internationally and being given two West End runs.

Her production of Why the Whales Came (both shows were by Michael Morpurgo, a great champion of Miller’s work) also played the Fringe as did Perfectly Imperfect Women, a biographical wonder tale which was a box office hit in the Capital in 2017.

“Danyah Miller is a storytelling phenomenon,” champions Morpurgo.
