Preview: Uncharted Waters, Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh

NEW wave circus - that’s how All Or Nothing and Strange Bird Zirkus describe their unique physical theatre, which they tour to Musselburgh’s Brunton Theatre this weekend.

Uncharted Waters finds Scotland’s leading aerial and circus artists telling three short stories, each set on the edge of reality; a moment of decision, a nautical journey, a relationship a rope, aerial fabrics and Chinese pole.

The first piece draws parallels between sailors and aerial acrobats with the Chinese pole representing the rigging as Lucy Deacon and Jennifer Paterson work high above the heads of the audience.

The final tale, meanwhile, finds Paterson playing a mermaid caught in the ropes.

Sandwiched between the two is a tender tango performed on the Chinese pole by Moritz Linkmann.

All use spectacular tricks and imagery that will convince you the performers can indeed walk in the air.
