Edinburgh firm introduces special lighting to kill Covid

An Edinburgh business has introduced ultraviolet lighting in their office to kill Covid-19 and help people get back to work.

KAL are a global ATM software developer and the first company in Scotland to introduce UVC lightbulbs to kill the coronavirus.

UVC light is known to kill 99.9 per cent of all known viruses, including coronaviruses. While it is commonly used in hospitals, airports and factories, it is rarely seen in offices.

Most UVC lamps that would be used in a home emit a relatively small dosage and would require lengthy exposure to kill coronavirus on surfaces. However, those commonly used in hospitals and factories can sterilise surfaces much faster.

The UVC lighting being used at KAL have been installed with specific controls so the UVC lights are only used at night, when no-one is in the office. This is to protect the people working at the office from being exposed to harsh doses of UVC light, which can cause skin and eye irritation.

CEO of KAL, Aravinda Korala said: “The health and well-being of our staff is our highest priority. During this pandemic, we are following all the guidance to protect our employees and continue delivering our ATM software to our customers. Installing UVC lighting is one further step in ensuring the highest levels of staff safety.”

As offices try to return to normality, it is anticipated that more will adopt UVC lighting as a way to effectively make the workplace as safe as possible and get people back to work.
