SSE '˜glitch' leaves Dalkeith resident with £38k gas quote

A system error from gas and electric company SSE left a resident in Dalkeith with a gas quote of over £38,000.

He told the Evening News that a normal figure for each day was between £4-£7 and that the quote from his smart meter ‘made his blood pressure rise on what is normally a peaceful Sunday’

Smart meters from SSE inform customer of exactly how much much electricity or gas they are consuming each day as well as the overall cost.

However, over the weekend, a series of customers took to social media to reveal their surprise when quotes began to emerge for exceptionally high bills.

SSE apologised and said no customers would be charged “the extra amounts resulting from errors”.

A spokesman for the company said “SSE is aware of the issues affecting a small number of our smart meters.

“The issue will be investigated as a matter of urgency and no customer will be charged the extra amounts resulting from errors with the smart meters.

“We would like to apologise to any customers if this has caused distress.”
