Edinburgh schools set for '˜best ever' exam results

PUPILS across Edinburgh will be celebrating today as schools reported their best ever exam results '“ smashing previous records.

New figures show 66 per cent of youngsters are now achieving one or more Highers by the end of S6, an increase of 11 per cent since 2011.

Education bosses hailed it as “another really positive year for our pupils”, insisting: “It’s a real achievement to have not only sustained but built on the successes from previous years.”

By the end of S4, 43 per cent of students secured five qualifications at National 5 level this year – four per cent up on last year.

Meanwhile, 37 per cent achieved three or more Highers by the end of S5, a two per cent increase from last year and an increase of eight per cent since 2011.

And a quarter of pupils are now leaving school with one or more Advanced Highers, three per cent more than last year.

Teenagers across Edinburgh woke up to their exam results this morning, with some choosing to receive the news by text ahead of the traditional postal delivery.

Councillor Paul Godzik, the city’s education leader, said this year’s results marked a “real success story”. He said: “This year’s results are very encouraging, with a year-on-year improvement since 2011 resulting in our best ever results and by the end of S6 an impressive 66 per cent achieved one or more Highers – an 11 per cent improvement since 2011.

“I want to congratulate all those who sat exams this year, and thanks must also go to all our staff who have been working extremely hard.

“Our pupils should be very proud of themselves too – all their hard work has certainly paid off and praise should also go to parents who have supported their children over the past year.”

He added: “Another key aim is to make sure all school leavers enter a positive destination of employment, training or further education.

“Initiatives such as the Edinburgh Guarantee are going a long way to making this a reality for many of our former pupils.

“With 92 per cent of our young people achieving and sustaining a positive destination this is a real success story.

“We will be looking to build on this in the future and I look forward to seeing many more placements and positive results.”

In total, 32 per cent of pupils are now achieving five Highers or more by the end of S6, maintaining last year’s result but marking a four per cent rise since 2011.
