Juliette Martin, 16, scored a staggering seven As in her Highers after “self-studying” two subjects outside of school time.

The Holy Rood High pupil took maths, biology, chemistry, physics and English during the normal school day, and taught herself geography and French at home.

Proud teachers admitted it was a “unique result” – but modest Juliette is keeping her feet firmly on the ground.

She said she was “really pleased”, adding: “It was a relatively heavy workload, but it was alright in the end. My friends were very supportive.

“The geography department in school were very kind and lent me several materials that I could study – and the French department did as well.”

The teenager, who speaks fluent French, is hoping to take five Advanced Highers next year – biology, chemistry, physics, maths and French – and wants to study Physics at Edinburgh University.

Elsewhere, Sinead Thin, 16, from Liberton, was celebrating after achieving eight As in her National 5 qualifications.

The St Thomas Of Aquins pupil said she was “really pleased” with the results and was thinking about entering a career in science when she leaves school. She added: “I found English really difficult, so that was probably the hardest.”
