The university has announced its collaboration with the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation to help more students enter higher education.

The foundation hopes to raise £500,000 to provide scholarships for disadvantaged black British students.

As part of this collaboration, the university will offer grants to cover tuition fees to at least three students over the course of 10 years, while the foundation will provide additional funding for living costs.

The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation was set up by Professor Richard Oreffo of the University of Southampton in summer 2020.

He said: “Access to university should not be limited by race or social class, but unfortunately this is not the case for all in our society. While many issues are at play in why more Black British students do not attend leading universities, the Cowrie Scholarship Foundation seeks to address a significant barrier: the financial cost of university education.”
