School closures: Structural fault confirmed in two high schools

TWO city high schools have been confirmed as having the structural fault which led to the unprecedented closure of 17 schools across the Capital.

A total of 7700 pupils are off school today following the closure decision late on Friday after construction problems were identified at Oxgangs and St Peter’s primaries.

City council chief executive Andrew Kerr said today that inspectors carrying out checks at the 17 schools had now identified the same fault at Craigmount and Gracemount high schools.

He said: “We have been carrying out checks over the weekend and we have found similar problems at Gracemount and Craigmount High.

“We are waiting for a full report but repairs will need to be carried out. Further inspections are taking place this morning.”

Meanwhile, the Scottish Parliament has offered to provide temporary accommodation as the council tries to make contingency arrangements for thousands of pupils.
