The popular Forrest Road venue has been left without income after shutting its doors during the lockdown.

“But it’s not just an pub or an institution, it’s a community for many locals and friends alike,” said former Sandy Bell’s bar worker Sarah Emmerson, 46, who set-up the fundraising page.

“Please don't let COVID - 19 or the cancellation of this years Fringe end the happiness.”

One of the great folk music venues in Edinburgh, the pub is known by musicians and fans worldwide.

All eight staff members have been put on furlough and £1,300-a-week rent deferred for three months.

“Sandy Bells pub - or known historically as The Forrest Road Bar - is a word famous folk bar in Edinburgh city centre,” added Sarah.

People flock from thousands of miles every year to have a pint pulled, drink a dram and listen to its local musicians.

“Many a talented and famous musician has entered its doors.”

The fundraising page was launched on Friday and had topped £1,500 last night.

More than 40 supporters had backed the campaign - with many leaving messages of support.

Andrew McCulloch wrote: “It’s only a little bit mate but I hope it helps. We will all get through this.

And Jeff McBeth added: “I love this pub. Many a quality time and sweet memories. I’ll do what I can to help you.

But with a target set of £15,000, more donations are needed from kind-hearted music fans.

“The boozer needs your help,” added Sarah.

“So please, no matter how small, please donate - think of all the those pints and drams that you’ve been unable to drink.

“Let’s put the money back in the bar before it’s too late.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation, can do so at the Sandy Bell's fundraising page
