WITH him housebound under coronavirus lockdown, Syd Horler’s family had little choice but to cancel his 90th birthday celebrations.

But daughter Maureen McLean wanted to make a fuss all the same - so she popped round to his Crewe Road North home with a cake to send best wishes from a safe distance.

Touching mobile phone footage shot by husband Stuart captures the moment Maureen launches into ‘happy birthday’ as a smiling Syd watches through the patio doors.

“My sisters and I were devastated that we couldn’t be with him and my mum - but this made their day,” said Maureen, 62.

Sisters Val and Carol are also self-isolating with underlying health conditions that put them in the high risk category for Covid-19.

Not only has the pandemic wrecked Syd’s birthday celebrations but a family trip to Spain for his and wife Marion’s 70th wedding anniversary later this month is also off.

“We’ve been getting their shopping and leaving it on the back door step so they can pick it up later,” said Maureen.

“He still drives and goes around to Morrisons so he’s missing going there but fortunately they’ve got a back garden so they can get a bit of fresh air.”
