The news comes as areas across the west of Scotland including Glasgow and Lanarkshire are set to face level four lockdown restrictions until December 11.

At the announcement this afternoon, Ms Sturgeon made clear that today’s decisions hope to protect the NHS and allow for a loosening of restrictions in the lead up to Christmas.

Speaking about the reasons for moving both East Lothian and Midlothian down a level, Ms Sturgeon said: “I am pleased to report that East Lothian and Midlothian have both seen a marked decline in infection rates – prevalence in these areas is significantly below the level for Scotland as a whole.

“On that basis, assuming no significant deterioration before then, I can confirm that East Lothian and Midlothian will move from level 3 to level 2 from next Tuesday 24 November.”

Under level two, indoor hospitality venues will close from 8pm, with last entry at 7pm and outdoor businesses will shut at 10.30pm.

In-home socialising will still be prohibited in these areas, barring some exceptions including caring for a vulnerable person.

Outdoor groups in public places will be limited to six people from two households.

Cinemas, amusement arcades and bingo halls will be the only leisure facilities allowed to remain open, with soft play, funfairs, indoor bowling, casinos, theatres, snooker or pool halls, music venues, nightclubs and adult entertainment venues all closed.

Only drive-in events will be permitted, with indoor, outdoor and stadium events cancelled.

Public buildings will impose protective measures while NHS services will reduce face-to-face contact with patients.
