Lothian region sees a rise of 57 cases as Scotland faces biggest daily jump of 486

The Lothians has seen 57 new positive tests in the last 24 hours bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the region to 4,052.

The news comes as Scotland sees its biggest daily jump in cases since the pandemic started back in March with 486 people testing positive across the country.

Of those 486, 224 were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde and 107 were in Lanarkshire.

Two new deaths were also reported in Scotland but it has not yet been confirmed where.

The First Minister also announced 83 patients are in hospital with Covid-19 and ten remain in intensive care during her daily briefing to the nation this afternoon, Wednesday 23 September.

Nicola Sturgeon said the high figure is reflective of more tests being carried out since the start of the pandemic back in March.

The 486 new cases today amount to 7.8 per cent of newly-tested people in Scotland.

So far, 25, 495 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Scotland and of those, 2,508 have died.

A nationwide ban on Scots visiting other households was introduced yesterday to prevent further spread of the virus.

Ms Sturgeon also announced in the same address to the country that Scotland will follow the new rules on pub closures in England which means they must shut their doors at 10pm.

Scots have also been advised against sharing car journeys with people from other households. And although a “circuit breaker” lockdown won’t be happening for now, it remains “under review.”
