Owners of the popular Mexican restaurant, based in Victoria Street in the city centre, have used its boarded up windows to express support for the health service.

Like thousands of other businesses across Edinburgh, Mariachi was forced to close last month when the government imposed wide-ranging restrictions to help fight coronavirus.

In large red letters above the restaurant’s door, the owners have written “VIVA NHS” - a phrase in Spanish that translates to “Long live the NHS”.

The writing on the two large windows either side of the door reads: “STAY HOME, STAY SAFE”, in a show of encouragement for the city’s population, as it enters its third week of lockdown.

Mariachi closed for the foreseeable future on Wednesday, March 22, publishing an emotional post on Twitter: “It’s with a heavy heart that, tonight, I closed up our restaurant for an undetermined amount of time.

“Thank you to all of our customers, friends and family who have supported us over the years”.
