Portobello teenager home after 59-hour journey from Honduras due to Covid-19

Her journey included a private flight to Mexico.

A Portobello teenager has made it home after a 59-hour journey from Honduras, where she was volunteering as an English teacher.

Flossy Reeves, 18, is now in isolation at home for two weeks as she has been travelling abroad.

Her journey took in an 11-hour drive with a private security company in Honduras and a ‘very fancy’ private flight to Mexico.

Flossy Reeves was in the village of Tomala in the Lempira region.

The former Portobello High School pupil had been volunteering with Scottish organisation Project Trust, which coordinated her return along with other stranded volunteers, and kept her parents informed throughout the journey.

She was based in the village of Tomala, in the Lempira region, for six months, and was due to return home on March 16.

However the borders were closed the day before, and Flossy was forced to go into quarantine for 14 days.

After two weeks she got diplomatic papers enabling her to make the 11-hour journey to Tegucigalpa, the capital, from where she and about 30 other volunteers got a private flight to Tolucha in Mexico.

Finally they flew from Mexico City to London, before a flight to Glasgow, followed by a lift to Edinburgh, arriving around 10pm on Sunday night.

"It is a very strange feeling that I have. It has not hit me yet that I am home,” she told BBC Radio Scotland’s Drivetime.

"I came back last night about 10pm and I have not hugged my mum or dad.

"We are keeping two metres distance because I have obviously been travelling internationally."
