Ian Rankin, author of the bestselling Rebus detective series, has posted photos of an empty Edinburgh city centre.

The Edinburgh-based writer was on his daily walk when he took the pictures, which show a view of the New College on The Mound from Princes Street, and a deserted Lawnmarket, taken from the junction with Bank Street.

Rankin, who turns 60 later this month, added the caption: “Daily walk. The Mound and Lawnmarket. Quiet enough to hear birdsong.”

The author’s tweet is the latest in a series of similar posts taken by people around the world, showing eerily quiet streets and squares in major cities.

Follower @ChipperHay commented under Rankin’s Tweet asking: “What would Rebus make of this?...And no Oxford Bar” - a reference to John Rebus’ favourite drinking spot in Rankin’s detective novels.
