Mr Padmaraj has become seriously unwell and is currently in a critical condition in hospital, with his blood oxygen levels below 70 per cent.

Ms Sugumaran said her husband needs to be “urgently moved” to a better facility. Unable to afford the costly medical fees for this, the worried wife set up a fundraising campaign.

The Go Fund Me page launched yesterday and has already smashed its target of £5000 having raised £6,150 in under 24-hours.

More than 50 donors have contributed to the cash fund with one anonymous donor gifting the desperate family £2000.

Mr Padmaraj, his wife Udhaya Sugumaran and their young daughter Liyah have all contracted the virus.

Explaining the serious nature of her husband's situation Ms Sugumaran said: “My husband Antony Padmaraj is critically ill in Tamil Nadu, India after testing positive for Covid-19 during a visit with our daughter Liyah.

“We were in India for medical treatment for removal of a 12cm lump on my uterus but we all tested positive for COVID and were unable to return to the UK in May as planned. Antony moved from Aberdeen a few years ago to work in Edinburgh.

“Although we were able to get him admitted to a hospital where he is on oxygen, his blood oxygen levels are under 70 per cent and he urgently needs to go to a better facility where he can recover.

“To achieve this the family needs to settle a circa £5K hospital bill and will have further costs when they move to the new hospital.

“Antony's mother who was with us is also critically ill and will require ongoing treatment. Our only local support is Antony's uncle who is trying to raise funds locally, but it's very difficult given the situation.”
