£335k for Alzheimer’s researcher

A RESEARCHER based at the University of Edinburgh is to receive a grant of £335,176 for her work on Alzheimer’s disease.

Karen Horsburgh is measuring the impact of small reductions of blood flow to the brain. When the amount of blood reaching brain cells drops, nutrients and oxygen are not delivered properly, which can lead to cell death, and the onset of vascular dementia. She will receive the money over three years from the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dr Horsburgh said: “This project will help to show us what changes can occur very early on in the development of vascular dementia and what changes can be caused by a slight reduction in blood flow to the brain.

“By understanding the mechanisms of vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, it is hoped that this will lead to the development of effective drugs to treat the diseases.”

Dr Anne Corbett, research communications manager at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “Alzheimer’s Society has made supporting more research into vascular dementia a priority. Dementia affects one in three people over the age of 65.”
