It was out with the old and in with the new at the start of the eighties as Edinburgh began to embrace a digital future and wave farewell to the industries, infrastructure and technologies of yesteryear.
Edinburgh city centre was positively teeming with people keen to welcome home local sprinter Allan Wells, who was fresh from securing Olympic gold in Moscow for the 100m dash.
Also in sport, Hearts, having been relegated for the first time in their history, won the First Division at the first attempt and were back in the top flight by the summer.

And Edinburgh Castle’s historic Mons Meg cannon was removed and sent to Armadale steel works for testing.

5. Indian Cavalry Club opening 1980
The proprietors of The Indian Cavalry Club, a new Indian restaurant in Atholl Place Edinburgh, opened it with a guard of honour on horseback in July 1980.
