Nostalgia: Waverley Market, 1984

THE wrappers were coming off what had been dubbed the city’s most famous “hole in the ground” on this day in 1984, as the £14 million construction on the new Waverley Market neared completion.

The Evening News was able to get behind the scenes to show residents what awaited in the new shopping centre developed “underneath” Princes Street. As well as 66 shops devoted to fashion and food there was a new tourist information service office at street level and dramatic features such as an ornamental pool and a thistle-shaped fountain. And while not quite finished, developers insisted it would be open for Christmas.
