International sandwich chain Subway launced a tongue-in-cheek Twitter outburst at a Hearts fan who claimed that their food was for 'peasants'.

The official UK and Ireland account replied to the Jambos fan who claimed that their sandwiches, including their famous fillings such as meatball marinara, were aimed at people with little money.

A poll, which was set up by popular Scottish football Twitter acount Pie and Bovril, asked followers which of Subway's choice of breads was their favourite.

This sparked the reply from Hearts fan @PeterHill77 who answered: "Subway's for peasants".

Safe to say, when Subway's social media team caught wind of the comment, they were all too happy to hit back.

They replied with the tongue-in-cheek retort: "True, we provide to the hard worker, the real men who appreciate a sub.

"Maybe one day a Jambo like you will understand that the peasants are the driving force behind every success.

"Go Hibs!"

That comment sparked a flurry of replies, including one from @jcameron2017 swearing to eat more at the fast food sandwich chain, saying: "I vow to buy at least 2 subs a week for lunch" and @07titch62 adding "Subway for lunch confirmed".

But when @BryMillan62 said: "Subway have been s***e for years. Better with a @GreggsOfficial [Greggs], Subway came back fighting, replying with the zinger: "So much for loyalty. Did you do the same thing when Hearts was relegated to the second division, switch from club?"
