Experts believe the Northern Lights could pass over Scotland between 9pm and 6am - with a better chance of being seen between 9pm and midnight.

Those wanting to see the dramatic light display should head to an area free of light pollution and hope for clear and dark skies.

People further to the north will also have a better chance of spotting the aurora, with sightings less likely the further south you are.

Locations with a good view of the northern horizon, such as beaches, headlands or the tops of hills, will also have an advantage, with the lights occurring to the north-east of the UK. Unfortunately, while the forecast for the aurora is good, the same can’t be said for the weather. The Met Office reports that much of the country will experience heavy cloud over the next few nights.
