However, the coronavirus pandemic caused the project to grind to a halt when Scotland went into a nationwide lockdown at the end of March.

Road works resumed on Lindsay Road, Melrose Drive and Constitution Street on June 15 and construction began on Leith Walk from Elm Row to Crown Place on June 22.

Costing £207.3m, the council is aiming to finish the project by early 2023.

Trams to Newhaven will add 2.91 miles of track in both directions, connecting Leith and Newhaven to the current end of the Edinburgh tram line at York Place with eight new stops.

Transport and Environment Convener Councillor Lesley Macinnes said: “This wonderful footage demonstrates the scale of the project, which will provide a quality, sustainable transport link for so many households along the route. Trams to Newhaven will help connect the rest of the city with all that’s on offer in Leith, opening up this lively area for economic and strategic development.

“Our team and contractors have been working extremely hard to mitigate the impacts of covid-19, and are still on track to begin welcoming passengers on-board by spring 2023, as originally planned. This footage demonstrates the progress being made so far and we’ll continue to update it as we proceed with the project.”
