Police are appealing for help after the incident on Monday in Howdenhall Drive.

The 81-year-old was at home when two men called at the door offering to do guttering work.

They got away with a sum believed to be least £10,000.

Officers are now urging anyone who can assist with their enquiries to come forward.

• A BUS carrying Belgian students returning from a ski holiday crashed into a wall in a Swiss tunnel, killing at least 22 children.

Police said 28 people were killed and another 24 students were hospitalised with injuries.

The bus carrying 52 people crashed around 9pm local time in a tunnel at Sierre near popular ski areas in the Swiss Alps.

A rescue helicopter and ambulances were called in to carry the injured.

• MAJOR improvements to approach roads at the new Forth crossing will leave motorists facing delays of up to two hours.

Drivers will also be hit with disruption due to rock-blasting and emergency repairs to the Forth Road Bridge and have been urged to divert via the Kincardine Bridge, leave “significant” extra time for journeys or take the train instead.

The biggest traffic jams are expected to be caused by a six-week project to create a bus lane and resurface the M90 north of the bridge.

• PLANS by Lloyds Banking Group to cut jobs in Edinburgh and outsource the posts to India were today branded “immoral”.

The banking giant announced it was to shed 216 jobs in the Capital, including 90 in IT, with around 47 of these posts being shipped out to Mumbai.

Unions were outraged at the move. Steve Tatlow, assistant general secretary at Lloyds Trade Union, who was due to meet staff in Edinburgh today, said: “This is disgraceful. While we might accept that cutting jobs is justified when a company needs less staff, this is immoral.”

• A WOMAN who died after her car crashed into a wall in the Capital has been named by police as Susanne Lumsden.

The 38-year-old, of the city’s Hyvot Grove, was killed when her car hit a wall in Gilmerton Road at around 6pm on Monday.

Firefighters freed her from her red Vauxhall Astra but she was pronounded dead at the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.
