ALMOST 80 teenage girls under the age of 16 have had multiple abortions in the last five years, it has emerged,
In reply to a Freedom of Information request about girls under the legal age of consent having abortions, NHS Lothian responded with a percentage of cases equivalent to 77.
Other health boards, including Fife, Grampian, Lanarkshire and Highlands said there were too few cases to give an exact number, while Greater Glasgow health board was unable to provide statistics. Sexual health charities said the figures showed youngsters needed to be better educated about sex, while experts warned some of those having more than one abortion may be the victims of sexual abuse.
Natika Hall of the sexual health charity FPA, said: “We don’t know the circumstances behind these numbers and, clearly, we have to be sensitive to the fact that some of them may well be cases of abuse.
“Many of these young people may be vulnerable.”
