The former Wimbledon champion has pledged to make the 10,500-mile return journey home even if it means having to give up on a chance of winning his third Grand Slam.

Murray, 28, who has reached the final in Melbourne four times, is due to play his first-round match against German teenager Alexander Zverev on Tuesday, with the final scheduled to take place on January 31.

His wife, also 28, who is in the late stages of pregnancy, has not travelled to Australia with the world number two.

But Murray has revealed contingency plans include hiring a private jet if she goes into labour.

The 2013 Wimbledon champion, who wed Kim in his native Dunblane last April, said: “My child is more important to me, and my wife is more important to me, than a tennis match.

“I don’t have a plane on standby but I guess it would depend on when I would get the call. Private jet is an option.

“As soon as I get the call, I would just go for it, I guess.”
