Anti-fascist group ready to stop SDL staging city demo

UNITED Against Fascism has outlined plans for a counter- protest against members of the Scottish Defence League who they believe plan to ignore a council ban on their march next week.

Members of the far-right group had planned to march through Edinburgh on September 10 but were prohibited by the city council.

However, reports have suggested the group may go against the ban.

Unite Against Fascism is organising a counter-protest and will assemble at 11am at the foot of The Mound for a rally, before moving towards the Wellington statue at the east end of Princes Street.

The group says by holding the area around the Wellington statue it will physically prevent the SDL from entering the city centre. Although it is not known if the SDL will march that day, police are expected to deploy a considerable amount of personnel on the streets.

Although only around 50 members of the SDL attended a previous march in February 2010, hundreds of officers were needed to separate them from anti-fascist groups on the day.
