A PET Muscovy duck that went missing from its home in Edinburgh has been returned after an appeal by animal welfare officers.

The exotic bird, named Duckbert, was found waddling near his owners’ home in Buckstone Loan East on December 20 and an alert was quickly raised with staff at the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).

After an appeal for information, Duckbert’s owners came forward and the pet was handed back in full health yesterday.

Brightly coloured and weighing up to 15 lbs, Muscovy ducks are native to Central and South America, although small populations also exist in parts of Europe.

SSPCA staff said Duckbert’s owners were “hugely relieved” to see him back home.

A spokesman said: “The owners were absolutely delighted when Duckbert was returned. He’s now safe and sound.

“After he escaped they were worried they would never see him again, so they’re overjoyed now.”
