An army veteran who served in Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq, had his medals stolen after carrying the Scottish National Standard at a Remembrance Day ceremony.

Carl Smith, 39, from Armadale, who served with the 2nd Battalion Light Infantry for 12 years, carried the flag for the second year in a row at the event in Edinburgh on Sunday and appeared on television as footage of the event was broadcast.

After the event he left a pub in Bathgate and noticed his eight medals were missing.

Mr Smith said: “I realised they were gone when I was walking down the street so I went back to check if they were at the pub but they weren’t.

“I reported it to the police. I’m gutted. I just want them back without much fuss, I’m not interested in anything else.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police in West Lothian are investigating following the theft of military service medals in Bathgate.
