Big Sleepout 2012 call to help Capital’s homeless

A HOMELESS charity is urging people to spend a night on the street to raise cash and awareness of the issue.

The Bethany Christian Trust wants volunteers to gather on Friday night at the City Chambers as part of its Big Sleepout 2012.

It is hoped that by experiencing a night under the stars residents more used to home comforts will gain a greater appreciation for homelessness. Those involved can also get sponsored, raising money for the Leith charity.

A spokeswoman for the organisation said: “Bethany supports people struggling with homelessness to tackle their addictions, find accommodation, get shelter, food, clothing, essential household furniture, to learn important skills like reading, writing and numbers and to help them get back on their feet again.”
