Big thumbs up for social enterprises

THE national body set up to represent social enterprises is urging councils in Scotland to recognise the benefits of businesses with social goals.

Social Enterprise Scotland said that at a time when local authorities were making cutbacks, the firms it represented had a significant role in job creation and training.

Social enterprises are businesses that trade specifically for social purposes, such as the The Engine Shed in Newington, which trains and provides jobs for those with learning difficulties.

Laurie Russell, chair of Social Enterprise Scotland, said: “Many Scottish local authorities work well with their social enterprise businesses – but too often opportunities to do good business and make a big impact are missed.

“As we take on the challenge of public service reform, social enterprises are the best vehicles to create more employment with those hardest to reach.”
