The incident is said to have taken place in Great Junction Street in Leith, Edinburgh on September 27 2013.

The indictment includes claims Shirley went at speeds of more than 42 mph – said to be excessive due to road and traffic conditions.

He is also alleged to have been in “dangerous proximity” to oncoming vehicles and that he failed to take evasive action to prevent hitting Miss Tumwijukye.

The 51 year-old grandmother – from Uganda – later died from her injuries at Edinburgh Royal Hospital.

Shirley, of Muirhouse, today denied the charge.

Judge Lord Bannatyne set a trial due to begin in May in Edinburgh.
