Birthday for materials reuse group

A GROUP that encourages people to reuse materials and equipment was today celebrating its first year in existence.

Remade in Edinburgh is an attempt to move away from the “culture of cheap disposable items” and instead encourage people to fix and modify items to find a use for them.

It was today holding an event at the South Bridge Resource Centre, which includes an apron-making workshop, an “autopsy” of a laptop and a clothes swap shop.

The group also recently secured a waste action grant from the city council, which will pay for the rent of the room that it hires for its meetings.

Co-ordinator Sophie Unwin said: “We are designing a project that is tapping into local community’s ideas and involvement and working with a range of wonderful partners on textiles, computers and furniture repair. “We now have 250 people on our mailing list.”
