Books boost for children in city’s care

Children in the care of the city council are to receive a new book every month until they are five under a scheme devised by Dolly Parton.

The Imagination Library was established by the country singer in her local community in Sevier County, Tennessee, to encourage children to read.

It is now being rolled out further afield, and will be introduced to children in care in Edinburgh by July with backing from the Scottish Government.

The books, which are chosen by a panel of experts on children’s literacy, will be posted out to children.

Councillor Paul Godzik, convener for children and families, said: “Reading is a vital part of all children’s early years and can significantly benefit their language and writing skills.

“This initiative will give a helping hand to these children, ensuring that they have the best possible start in life.”
