THE need for CCTV coverage of the Telfer Subway has been highlighted by Lothians MSP Sarah Boyack.

Ms Boyack visited the subway yesterday, accompanied by council officials and representatives of the police. The meeting follows a recent spate of incidents in the area, including a series of attempted robberies at knifepoint.

In a response to Ms Boyack’s concerns the council said it believed there was adequate CCTV coverage in the area, however, police said that additional CCTV coverage could deter crime altogether or help identify suspects in any criminal activity.

Ms Boyack said: “People have been reassured by hi-visibility police patrols over the festive period but now that these have concluded there is a need to provide a more permanent deterrent.

“The council has stated its belief that the current coverage is adequate but I hope to persuade them that is not the case. The cameras identified by the council are not dedicated to the subway and, in the case of the north end of the route, not even close to the entrance.”
