Breakthrough on male pill

CITY scientists have discovered a gene that could lead to the creation of a new male contraceptive pill.

Researchers at Edinburgh University said the contraceptive may be possible following the discovery of gene Katnal1.

Dr Lee Smith, reader in genetic endocrinology at the Medical Research Council Centre for Reproductive Health, said: “If we can find a way to target this gene in the testes, we could potentially develop a non-hormonal contraceptive.”
