TWO brothers who robbed a shop after threatening the owner with a knife were caught by the police with just over £24 in their possession.

David Melbourne, 24, and stepbrother Gary, 23, were regular customers at the Asif Corner Store in the city’s Hailesland Grove.

At an earlier hearing they admitted assaulting owner Mahmood Asif, brandishing a knife at him, threatening him and robbing him.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday, David was jailed for 21 months and Gary locked up for four years.

The court heard that at about 6pm on March 21, Mr Asif was cashing up when the two men entered. Gary grabbed the till but it was attached to an electric cable.

Mr Asif was holding on to the base of the till and at that point Gary produced a knife and cut the cable.
