Callum Marshall from the 51st Edinburgh Company, based in Bonnyrigg, was presented with his certificate by the Very Reverend Andrew McLellan, Brigade National Chaplain and former Moderator of the Church of Scotland, at a special graduation ceremony at Kirkton Parish Church, Carluke, last Saturday.

Speaking after his graduation, Callum said: “KGVI has provided me with a qualification, helped improve my leadership and communication skills, whilst at the same time develop friendships which I know will last a lifetime.

“This incredible experience has given me the motivation and confidence to make a difference for future BB generations.”

The course, which began in the 1950s in memory of King George VI, is a two-year programme which covers key aspects of BB training, equipping young leaders to lead activities in their local BB group.

It includes a two-week residential course and allows young people to show and develop their skills, regardless of academic ability, which they can transfer into the workplace or further education.

Bill Stevenson, director of the Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said: “The KGVI Youth Leadership course is a fantastic experience for our young people.

“They put in a lot of time and effort and it is only right their hard work is rewarded.

“We were delighted the Very Reverend Andrew McLellan was able to present the certificates.

“The KGVI graduates go back to their local group and make a significant impact, using their time, talent and enthusiasm to make a difference to the next generation of BB members.

“Recent growth in our membership underlines the need for even more adult volunteers, such as these young people, so we can continue to provide opportunities for children and young people.”

The Boys’ Brigade was founded in Glasgow on October 4, 1883 by Sir William Alexander Smith.

From this one Company formed in Scotland, the BB has grown in to a worldwide movement having worked with millions of children and young people for well over a century.
