Centre gives statue seal of approval

The Scottish Seabird Centre is celebrating autumn’s seal season in style, as a striking new sculpture was officially unveiled on the rocks below the café deck.

Donated by the chairman of the trustees, Rear Admiral Neil Rankin, and the vice chairman, Sandy Grant Gordon, “Sandy the Seal” was created by art foundry, Powderhall Bronze in Leith.

Originally created in clay and cast in bronze “Sandy” is a life-sized grey seal pup, the model of which was created by one of the directors at Powderhall Bronze, Brian Caster.

Mr Rankin said: “This is perfect timing for us to unveil Sandy as seal season has only just begun.

“It is a magical time at the centre with new seal pups being born on Craigleith and the Isle of May, and visitors can witness this amazing experience on our live screens.”
