A CHEMICAL leak resulted in the temporary closure of an East Lothian swimming pool after the emergency services were called to the scene.
Firefighters in protective suits rushed to the pool in Prestonpans after a spillage of chemicals used to treat pool water was reported by staff at around 6am yesterday.
Fortunately no members of the public were present at the time of the incident and no-one was hurt as a result of the spill.
An investigation is ongoing into what caused the incident, although it is believed the chemicals are thought to have leaked from a drum in one of the pool store rooms.
The drum was removed to a safe area by a team of firefighters, who were decontaminated afterwards.
The incident comes after a £20,000 fine was handed down to health firm Virgin Active after an accident in 2010, when chemicals were accidentally mixed, causing an outbreak of toxic chlorine gas at the fitness suite in the Capital’s Omni Centre.
