The Chester Residence, in Edinburgh’s Rothesay Place, has been named the “third best luxury hotel in the world” by reviews site TripAdvisor based on the opinions of international travellers.

The hotel’s popularity was boosted, at least a little by the way staff helped Jake Tober from London, who left behind his favourite teddy in June but was thrilled to be reunited with it and learn of its adventures in Scotland’s capital.

General manager Mark Lambson said: “We had a guest who left behind his teddy.

“When we got him ready we took some photos of a day in the life at the Chester and had him working around the property doing bar drinks, working at reception and things like that.

“We then put it together as a story and sent it to Jake, who was thrilled.

“We have the luxury of spending a bit of time with our guests and getting to know them and doing what we know will make them happy.”

The hotel is made up of 23 serviced apartments, with guests given access to a bar, concierge and even a private chef or butler.

Management say it is the staff who “make it what it is” by going out of their way to give guests whatever they need.

The hotel has been known to arrange a horse and cart for a bridal party who found themselves stranded after their wedding car broke down and staff stepped in when four Welsh rugby fans lost their tickets to an international match.

Many proposals have been made at the romantic lodgings, with grooms-to-be asking employees to get in on the act.

As part of the same awards, The Chester also scooped the “UK’s best small hotel” title for the third year running.

Mark added: “I didn’t think we could do any better than last year but to get it again is even more rewarding.

“Everything is a credit to the staff and the fact the awards come from the customers shows what they are doing is really appreciated by everyone.”

TripAdvisor’s James Kay said: “With more than 700,000 hotels in the running this year, what a fantastic achievement for a Scottish hotel to be named third in the world for luxury.”
