A SERIES of street improvements and a new drive to attract retailers are among the measures proposed to reverse the decline of Princes Street and the surrounding area.

Rose Street is in line for £1 million of improvements over the next 18 months, with designs being drawn up by the Princes Foundation on behalf of the council and Essential Edinburgh.

The “public realm” of Charlotte Square could benefit from a £2m upgrade as part of a wider £27m redevelopment of the former headquarters of the National Trust for Scotland.

A new retail strategy is also being drawn up, with business rates relief to stop traders going out of business and encouraging home-grown retailers into the Old Town under a new “Best of Scotland” drive among measures being considered. The council also wants to investigate how to secure funding for the redevelopment of the Ross Bandstand.
