A CAPITAL hairdresser has been given an out-of-this-world experience after being called on to provide an “emergency” colour on Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson’s hair.

Barrie Rutherford, 41, of Drumm Hairdressing, in George Street, made the four-hour trip to Glencoe where Johansson was staying after filming new movie Under the Skin.

The science fiction thriller, based on Michel Faber’s 2000 novel, tells the story of an alien who takes the form of a beautiful woman and then preys on men on the streets of Glasgow to harvest their organs.

Filming saw Johansson travelling around in a Transit van in the Highlands and carrying out secret interviews with the locals in Glasgow which sparked international interest.

The star was turned into a redhead for the role, but told the hairdresser she desperately needed to be “blonded up” before flying back to New York where she was due to appear on the red carpet for another film premiere.

“She said she was heading back to New York for a premiere and she did not have much time so I had to drive to Glencoe to meet her and then do her colour,” Mr Rutherford said.

“It was good, she was lovely and very down to earth and very funny.

“She’s a very nice person and she was very happy that someone could do it for her.”

Mr Rutherford made the trip with his five-year-old Labrador, Poppy, who enjoyed sitting on the self-confessed dog lover’s knee, and within four hours Johansson was transformed back into her more familiar golden look.

The hairdresser, who trained at London’s prestigious Vidal Sassoon salon, said the celebrity was the most high-profile customer he had ever had.

He added: “It was great to go and do something out of the ordinary because it’s not something you do every day, but at the end of the day she’s just a regular person who needed her hair doing.”

He also joked about helping Johansson again if she ever returned to Scotland, saying: “Of course I’d do her hair the next time she’s in Scotland, but I doubt that will ever happen.”

Under the Skin was released in UK cinemas last week and is due to be released in the US on April 4.
