Clipper crew avoids giant wave drama

THE Capital’s entry in the Clipper Round the World yacht race has arrived in San Francisco at the end of the event’s latest leg.

Edinburgh Inspiring Capital sailed beneath the Golden Gate Bridge on Sunday, at the end of the 6000-mile voyage across the Pacific from Qingdao in China.

As they celebrated their safe arrival, two injured crew members of another yacht in the race, Geraldton Western Australia, were transferred to a US Coast Guard cutter to be brought ashore.

Jane Hitchens, 50, a doctor, has suspected broken ribs, while 29-year-old software engineer Nik Brbora has a suspected pelvic strain.

They were among four people injured when a huge wave swept across the boat on Saturday. It had been hoped to airlift them by helicopter, but pilots decided the boat’s rigging and mast were a hazard. Two other injured crew members were expected to stay on board until it arrived in San Francisco Bay.
